InterContinental Phuket Resort reinforces its commitment to sustainable operations by transforming food waste from its restaurants and kitchens into organic fertilizer, which is then donated to Kamala Kindergarten School for use in its vegetable garden project. This initiative not only supports environmental education but also improves student nutrition through fresh produce harvested from the garden and served in school lunches.

Reducing Food Waste, Turning It into Community Resources
Each day, InterContinental Phuket Resort serves a large number of guests, inevitably generating leftover food from preparation and consumption. To minimize food waste and maximize the value of discarded materials, the hotel has adopted advanced organic waste management technology by installing an OKLIN food waste composter, which decomposes and converts food waste into organic fertilizer within 24 hours.

The resulting fertilizer is of high quality and safe for agricultural use. The hotel launched an ongoing program to donate this fertilizer to Kamala Kindergarten School, enabling the school to enrich its organic vegetable garden grown for students’ benefit. This collaboration creates a closed-loop cycle—reducing waste, supporting local education, and contributing to community well-being through sustainability in action.

Kamala Kindergarten: Learning Through an Organic Garden

Kamala Kindergarten has been using organic fertilizer provided by InterContinental Phuket Resort to grow seasonal vegetables and fruits in its garden. This not only helps produce healthy, chemical-free crops but also engages students in hands-on learning—from fertilizing and caring for plants to harvesting the produce.

The vegetables and fruits grown are used in the school’s lunch program, ensuring that children enjoy fresh, safe, and nutritious meals. Beyond nutrition, the project instills environmental awareness in students, helping them understand the food waste cycle and appreciate the value of reusing resources to create something beneficial.

Khun Bjorn Courage, General Manager of InterContinental Phuket Resort, stated:

“Our hotel places great importance on sustainability and aims to play an active role in reducing food waste in a tangible way. Transforming food scraps into organic fertilizer and sharing it with schools not only reduces waste but also benefits the community. We are delighted to see students participating in vegetable gardening and using the harvest in their lunch program, which promotes both health and learning at the same time.”

On the technology behind the food waste transformation, Ms. Nattakarn Klawvuthanan, Managing Director of Oklin (Thailand) Co., Ltd., said:

“We are committed to helping businesses and organizations reduce food waste effectively. Oklin’s technology can turn food waste into fertilizer within 24 hours, offering a solution that minimizes environmental impact while adding value to food scraps. InterContinental Phuket Resort is an excellent example of how technology can be used to create positive impact for both the community and the environment.”

The hotel’s food waste-to-fertilizer project not only reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills but also helps cut greenhouse gas emissions from organic waste disposal, while supporting organic farming and environmental education for young people.

Looking ahead, InterContinental Phuket Resort plans to expand this initiative to other schools and communities, while encouraging hotels and restaurants in Phuket to adopt the same approach—working together to build an environmentally friendly tourist city and become a model for sustainable food waste management.
