SookSiam at ICONSIAM, in collaboration with Kasikorn Bank, Thai Paper Company Limited under Fest by SCGP, the Faculty of Engineering at Chulalongkorn University, and the Carbon Institute for Sustainability Project, organized “SOOKSIAM: Save the Earth Year 2” (#SaveTheEarth) from July 17 to July 31, 2023 at SookSiam, G Floor, ICONSIAM, under the concept of turning “food waste” into “fertilizer” — a sustainable solution for food waste management.

From the global situation and impact of food waste each year, more than 1.3 billion tons of food — equivalent to one-third of all food produced worldwide — ends up being discarded.
In Thailand, over 60% of total waste comes from food waste, with each Thai generating an average of 254 kilograms per year. This creates significant environmental and societal challenges:
- Methane (CH₄) emissions from decomposition, a greenhouse gas 27–30 times more potent than CO₂, contributing to 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
- Odor pollution and the spread of pathogens.
- Resource loss, as one-quarter of the world’s water supply is used to produce food that ultimately becomes waste.
Sooksiam at ICONSIAM is committed to driving sustainable growth, consistently operating its business with social responsibility. The organization focuses on sustainable development alongside supporting communities, society, and environmental stewardship.
To further this commitment, Sooksiam has launched the “Food Waste Segregation Project for Circular Economy”, which transforms food waste into fertilizer. The project aims to raise public awareness on proper food waste segregation — placing waste in the right bin — to promote good hygiene in the community, while maximizing the reuse of food waste for beneficial purposes.
This initiative also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3, which targets a 50% global reduction in food waste by 2030.
In addition, the initiative encourages entrepreneurs and vendors to switch to Fest Food Safety Packaging — eco-friendly packaging made from biodegradable materials that decompose within 60 days — and to replace regular plastic bags with PE bags containing 30% recycled plastic. It also promotes the use of LED energy-saving bulbs to continuously save energy and reduce global warming.
The primary objective is to implement efficient food waste management within Sooksiam, minimizing waste sent to landfills, and raising awareness among residents and visitors about food waste issues. The project aims to instill social and environmental responsibility in waste management and maximize reuse.
Sooksiam also joins forces with key partners — the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, SCG’s Community Power Network, and Pracharath Rak Samakkee Social Enterprise (Thailand) Co., Ltd. — to drive SDG-aligned policies and further sustainable environmental conservation.
At the “SOOKSIAM Save the Earth Year 2” event (#SaveTheEarth), visitors can enjoy a variety of highlight activities, including the launch of the “Food Waste Separation and Composting Project” — turning food waste into plant-nourishing fertilizer to be donated to communities and farmers under the Royal Initiative Projects (ORDPB). The event also features an ECO-Craft Exhibition, showcasing products such as ECO-Print designs, recycled-material creations like cement bag handbags, home décor from plastic bottles and upcycled materials, natural fiber handicrafts, and other eco-friendly goods. The venue is adorned with spectacular floral mobiles, accompanied by live garden music and eco-workshops. One workshop, “Making Thai Fruit Products from Loofah,” will be offered to 40 international students from China on 21 July 2023, 1:00–4:00 PM, promoting sustainable environmental engagement.
Special activities include the Fest food packaging booth, introducing Fest Bio, an innovative eco-friendly food packaging solution. Produced from 100% eucalyptus pulp sourced from commercial plantations, Fest Bio is environmentally friendly, supports farmer incomes, meets international production standards, is safe for food, microwave- and oven-safe, resistant to oil and liquids for hours without leakage, and fully biodegradable within 60 days. Vendors at the event are encouraged to adopt eco-friendly packaging, while the public is invited to embrace environmental responsibility through Fest Bio usage.
Shoppers can also participate in the “Save the Earth with KBank & Fest by SCGP” green shopping promotions from 17 July – 16 August 2023:
