From Food Waste to Learning Gardens – Marasca Samui and Cabanas Beach Club
Marasca Samui and Cabanas Beach Club, led by General Manager Mr. Alex Magaton and his team, visited Wat Nara Charoensuk School to organize activities with students under the concept of developing the community alongside caring for the environment sustainably. This activity is part of the hotel’s ongoing corporate social responsibility initiative, which has supported the school continuously since 2024.
One of the key highlights of the event was the handover of 50 kilograms of high-quality plant nutrients, produced from over 294 kilograms of the hotel’s food waste through Oklin’s advanced biotechnology. The process generates no wastewater, emits no unpleasant odors, reduces food waste volume, cuts methane emissions, and transforms kitchen scraps into safe, high-quality plant nutrients suitable for agriculture—a tangible example of the circular economy the hotel has long championed.
Following the handover, the hotel team joined students in planting a vegetable garden on the school grounds to supply fresh ingredients for the school lunch program. This initiative not only supports students’ nutrition without relying solely on outside sources but also gives them hands-on experience in growing pesticide-free vegetables, enriching the soil with natural nutrients, and understanding the value of local resources.
Mr. Alex Magaton, General Manager of the hotel, shared, “We believe in the power of action and community engagement. Today’s activity is not just about sharing resources—it’s about inspiring children to understand the value of responsible resource management, fostering environmental awareness, and helping them connect with nature through activities everyone can take part in.”
The impact went far beyond the vegetable garden. Students learned first-hand that what was once considered “waste” could be turned into a resource that helps produce fresh food for their classmates. They gained lessons in organic waste management, resource upcycling, crop care, teamwork, and shared responsibility.
Through this initiative, the school received not only plant nutrients and a vegetable garden but also an “outdoor classroom” where students could learn without textbooks—an accessible, relatable approach to environmental education with the potential to be expanded in the future, both within the school and at students’ homes.
Marasca Samui and Cabanas Beach Club remain committed to genuine community engagement, with a focus on environmental sustainability, education, and quality of life. This includes environmental improvement projects, waste reduction, efficient resource use, and creating opportunities for guests and business partners to participate in these initiatives as well.
